Litter-Box Problems: Common Non-Medical Causes
Accidents are sometimes medical. A veterinarian should rule that out if a previously reliable cat starts soiling.
Box number
A common household rule is one box per cat, plus one extra if space allows.
Location
Avoid placing the box next to a washing machine or in a blocked corner. Cats need an exit path.
Litter type
Many cats prefer unscented clumping litter. Strong perfume can drive them away. See Cat Litter.
Cleaning
Scoop daily. Wash the box on a schedule that matches the litter type.
What this page does not do
It does not diagnose cystitis, arthritis, or kidney disease. Painful urination is an emergency.
