Bird Cage Setup Basics

Cage size and bar spacing must match the species you keep. A shop label is not a species identification.

Placement

Keep the cage out of kitchen fumes and direct midday sun. Birds need a day/night light cycle.

Perches

Use more than one perch diameter. Avoid sandpaper perches that scrape feet.

Food and water

Place dishes where droppings do not land in them. See Bird supplies.

Cleaning

Replace water daily. Wash dishes and tray on a schedule you can keep.

Health

Fluffed feathers, sitting on the floor, or not eating needs an avian-experienced veterinarian quickly. Birds hide illness.
