How clumping clay works

Clumping litters use sodium bentonite clay, which swells and sticks to itself when wet. Urine forms a firm ball you can lift out intact, leaving the clean litter behind. Done daily, that keeps odour down with far less litter used than emptying a full tray every few days.

Routine

Scoop at least once a day and top up to bring the depth back to seven to ten centimetres. Wash the tray out with plain soap and water every few weeks — avoid strongly scented cleaners and anything containing pine or citrus oils, which many cats find aversive.

Switching litter

Cats form strong habits about substrate. If you are changing type or brand, mix the new litter into the old over a week or so rather than swapping in one go, and keep the tray in the same place while you do it.
