About Grooming & Hygiene
Brushing
Match the tool to the coat: a slicker or fine comb for long fur that mats, a rubber or bristle brush for short coats. Regular brushing removes the loose hair that would otherwise be swallowed during self-grooming, which is the practical way to reduce hairballs.
Work in the direction of the coat, in short sessions, and stop before the animal has had enough rather than after. Mats close to the skin should be cut out or dealt with by a groomer — pulling them hurts and can tear skin.
Nails
Clip only the clear tip and stay well clear of the pink area, which contains blood vessels and nerves. On dark nails, take small amounts off at a time. One or two nails per session is a perfectly good pace for an animal still learning to accept it.
Bathing
Cats are largely self-cleaning and rarely need a bath unless something is stuck to the coat. Dogs need one occasionally. Use a shampoo made for pets — human products are the wrong pH for animal skin — rinse thoroughly, and dry the ears and undercoat properly afterwards, which matters a great deal in humid weather.
