About Adult Food
What adult maintenance means
Once a cat stops growing, the job of food changes from building tissue to maintaining it. Adult formulas carry fewer calories per gram than kitten food, which is what keeps a neutered indoor cat from putting on weight without leaving it hungry.
Weight is the thing to watch
Indoor cats in flats get much less exercise than free-roaming cats, and neutering lowers energy requirements further. Weigh your cat monthly if you can; a 500g gain on a 4kg cat is over ten per cent of body weight. If the waist is disappearing when viewed from above, cut the daily portion by around ten per cent rather than switching food entirely.
Senior cats
From around eleven years, appetite and kidney function often change. There is no fixed age to switch to a senior diet — it is a decision to make with your vet based on bloodwork and body condition, not on the birthday alone.
